WHEN GREAT FOOD CAUSES PLANS TO GO AWRY
Dining at Pitchers Place Restaurant in Gores Landing, Ontario
We had gone in with a plan when we decided to try out Pitchers Place restaurant. We were going to each order a different meal, and then we would share, so we could taste both dishes. However that idea quickly went out the window when we separately tasted our own dishes. We liked our own meals so much that we inadvertently hoarded and gobbled. I completely forgot about the fact that I was supposed to share with Sara. She remembered the plan when my plate was empty, and she was down to her very last bite. She graciously offered it to me, but with a plaintive look in her eye that begged me not to take that final morsel of pure joy from her. Rather than be a bad friend, I let her have it….
Pitchers Place is a small and cozy 30 seat restaurant in Gores Landing and in view of the beautiful Rice Lake. It is owned and operated by Allan and Shanna, and opened for business in 2014. Since then, I have heard a lot of great things about this restaurant, but this was my first opportunity to eat there. And I did. In fact I ate very well.
The Pitchers Place menu is an eclectic mix of different regional flavours, paired together with originality, creativity, and attention to detail, to create dishes that are immensely devourable. Allan and Shanna’s focus is on preparing healthy meals, crafted from fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced as much as possible from local farmers and suppliers in the region. With that in mind, the menu regularly changes based on what is seasonally available.
On the day we were there, Allan promptly seated us, took our drink orders and then shared with us the day’s specials – a mouthwatering list that had us salivating before we had even looked at the menu.
I ordered the PP Buffalo Churrasco Chicken Sammie- 24 hour brined roast chicken, piri piri sauce, aged cheddar and blue cheese dressing, red onion, napa cabbage and a butter bun. I paired it with the soup of the day, a thai sweet potato. Sara also had the soup, and the PP Lox melt – an open faced sandwich of house cured trout, old cheddar, fennel, red onion, celery, pickled radish, herbed sour cream on light rye bread.
I went into Pitchers Place with no expectations. I came out...converted. The meal was amazing! Most of the ingredients were from local suppliers. Allan and Shanna dropped by our table every once in a while to check how everything was and to see if we needed anything. Service was perfectly attentive, but not too attentive so as to be annoying.
Pitchers Place not only serves great food and drink for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, but Allan and Shanna also regularly try out new ideas to share with the community. They offer catering services and will work with you to create a custom menu for your event. They host special events, and parties and have specialty menus on certain holidays like Valentines Day. In the past they have had summer yoga sessions behind the restaurant. This coming summer they will host a farmers market on Friday afternoons. What’s not to love about a business that supports other local businesses and aims to source out and use fresh local food as much as possible?
With super tasty food and drink, including a great selection of alcoholic beverages, and wonderful service, we had a great time and filled our bellies with delicious food. We will certainly be back to Pitchers Place. Maybe today is the day…..
